Depicted Experiences: German-Jewish Photographs 1890-1960. Research Seminar, Department of Cultural, Media and Visual Studies, University of Nottingham, 3 April 2019, 4:30 p.m. A21 Humanities Building [UoN Link]

In my talk I will give a brief introduction to the AHRC project Photography as Political Practice in National Socialism at the University of Nottingham in which my own research project Mobile memories. Narrations in Jewish Private Photographs 1890-1960 is embedded. Hence I will give major examples for main strands in my project refering to the question of Jewish identities in albums and loose photographs, the (visual) construction of the other, main conventions of photography developed and/or adopted by German Jews, the special surroundings and situations (“Photographieranlaesse”) through up-coming persecution in Nazi Germany, which relied on Jewish experiences during the National Socialism and the question, how photographs were used as mobile memories in the context of emigration and exile. Also I will discuss the specific methodological problems we have as researches dealing with German-Jewish photographs: who collected Jewish photosgraphs after 1945 in museums and archives, and in which conditions we find our material? And how will this affect my on narration in my book on German-Jewish Photographs 1890-1960?
